My name is Annandi Merhai, Founder of Devi Designs. I had a vision at a very young age, that art would be a wonderful career option for me. Currently, I’m pursuing an art degree that helps my extensive skill to produce and continue to grow as a fine artist. Photography being my main area of study, therefore, has expanded into a business venture with elusive taste in Design and Visual Arts.
Exploration is key to any successful business and that is what I do. I try to combine the love for art with innovative ways of presenting a work of art. My current experience pattern has been involving myself as much as possible in cultural events to pursue an artistic journey. Some inspirations I have are believing in a higher power such as God in my case the Divine Mother.
The name of the business has come from my middle name “Devi” which is another name for the Hindu Divine Mother, Durga. A lot of my work does touch on South Asian themes as a perspective of my cultural background. Being born up with West Indian and Indian ties, it is hard to place myself on the Canadian map. I often question what is the meaning of life and the purpose of creating the art I do. It is very difficult to live between two continents and live in Canada and try to make South Asian based works with little experience of travel to either place.
By being an artist it is yet the hardest but most satisfying career. Sticking with it and making it out in the world takes time and patience. Dedication and a will to never loose sight of the main goal is what keeps us artists going at what we do. Gaining experience is something that can only help you as an artist, so keep on following me, and check out my links!
